Nobody thought we could do this. We're proving the cynics wrong every day.

CNN...

DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) -- Barack Obama will win the Iowa Democratic caucus, CNN projects, based on early results.
UPDATE: Video from MSNBC:

UPDATE II: LA Times:

The news agency also projected Obama as the winner over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. Clinton and Edwards were running neck and neck for second place.
UPDATE III: AP:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Sen. Barack Obama, bidding to become the nation's first black president, captured the Iowa caucuses Thursday night, opening test in the race for the 2008 Democratic nomination...

Obama, 46 and a first-term senator from Illinois, eased past a high-powered field that included Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, the former first lady, and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, the party's 2004 vice presidential nominee.
UPDATE IV: ABC News "Obama emerges victorious in Iowa:

ABC News projects that Illinois Sen. Barack Obama will be the winner of the Iowa Democratic caucuses. At this point ABC News does not have enough information yet to project who will come in second or third.

Over the last year in Iowa leading up to today's caucus, Obama's hope-infused rhetoric of a political fresh start went head-to-head with Clinton's message, built on a foundation of strength, experience and electability. The two themes have been at loggerheads among Democratic voters in the Hawkeye state; though increasingly experience and electability gave way to idea of change and a new direction.
UPDATE V: Washington Post:

Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) secured victory in the Iowa Democratic caucuses, a stunning affirmation of his message of change and a stinging setback to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) -- the long time national frontrunner. Clinton called Obama to concede.

With nearly 1,500 of the state's 1,781 precincts reporting their results, Obama led with 35 percent of the votes followed by former senator John Edwards and Clinton, both with 30 percent.

A large number of news media outlets have declared Obama the winner and his campaign was estimating that turnout surged above 200,000 -- a massive increase from the roughly 125,000 Democrats who participated in 2004.

UPDATE IX: Washington Post The Trail:

When the networks called the race, Barack Obama supporters had just started to trickle into the downtown arena that the campaign had booked for caucus night, and they reacted with both shock and glee as the returns rolled in. Senior Obama advisor David Axelrod said the most surprising thing was the turnout.

"These were numbers you'd expect almost in a primary," he said. "The prodigious turnout was breathtaking, and it eclipsed anything I heard predicted. It's just fabulous to see people engaged in this way."

One crucial group, he said: young voters. "Younger voters participated in far greater numbers than ever before," said Axelrod as he studied the screen of his Blackberry, still appearing somewhat stunned at the returns.
UPDATE X: CBS News:

Entrance polls of Democratic caucus attendees also confirm some expectations for the evening - Clinton starts the night with strong support among women, and Obama is showing strength among young attendees.

"Young and first-time voters delivered for Obama as his campaign predicted and change was the number one concern of over half of Democratic caucus goers, creating the conditions for his victory," Ververs added. "His campaign now heads to New Hampshire with momentum, a state loaded with Independent voters who can now visualize him as a winner."
UPDATE XI: MSNBC:

DES MOINES, Iowa - Sen. Barack Obama, campaigning to be the first black president in American history, won the Iowa caucuses Thursday night, turning back rivals Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in the opening test of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination...

Obama, 46, and a first-term senator from Illinois, and Clinton each had sought to make history, he the most viable black presidential candidate in history, she a former first lady bidding to become the first female commander in chief.
UPDATE XII: MSNBC "Heavy Turnout..."

The state party said later that with 93.5 percent of the precincts reporting, there had been a record 218,000 caucus participants.
"Linda Lohse-Lange, of West Des Moines, has been going to caucuses since 1976. She has been a state delegate for both parties, but she showed up Thursday night in a bright red hat adorned with buttons for Obama.

"I think it's very serious, more serious than in the past," Lohse-Lange said. "I was surprised the parking lot was so full. I had a hard time finding a place to park."
UPDATE XIII: Chicago Tribune:

Fueled by record turnout among young and new voters, Sen. Barack Obama won an historic and convincing victory in the Iowa caucuses Thursday night, a win that validated his status as a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

He handily defeated both Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, ending any talk of Clinton as her party's presumptive favorite.

The win propels Obama to New Hampshire with a strong wind behind him with only four days remaining before the first-in-the nation primary. A strong turnout from independent voters helped deliver the victory.

Turnout surged for all Democrats, easily surpassing the 125,000 voters in the 2004 primary with only two-thirds of the vote counted.

Obama's message of change clearly trumped Clinton's pitch about experience.
UPDATE XVI: CNN.com:

With such a close race on both sides, voter turnout was key. The Iowa Democratic Party reported seeing record turnout. The party said there were 218,000 caucus attendees with 93.5 percent of the precincts reporting.

The Iowa Democratic Party said 124,000 people participated in the 2004 caucuses, while the Republican Party of Iowa estimated that 87,000 people took part in the 2000 caucuses. (President Bush ran unchallenged for a second term in 2004.) Photo See your pictures of the candidates in Iowa »

Caucus-goer Kathy Barger, inside a Democratic caucus site in Walnut, Iowa, said the room she was in was packed to the brim with a line out the door.

"I don't know how they are going to be able to fit everybody in the room, much less count the votes," she said. "There are bodies in every available space in the room."
UPDATE XVII: CNN.com:

DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) — At Obama's caucus night headquarters in Des Moines, the hall is filling up with people — many young — screaming "We did it!" When they see returns on the big screen TVs ,the crowd bursts into spontaneous rounds of Obama's campaign chant: "Fired up — Ready to go!"

Obama aides say returns show Obama did better than expected among seniors and in rural districts.

The candidate himself seemed to be in a confident mood today. At a visit to a restaurant this afternoon he told diners "I feel good" or "We're doing great."
UPDATE XVIII: Donna Brazille on Obama's "momentum"...

Re: We did it | Report to Admin Reply

I have been involved in the Dems for years. As my community is a retirement community, most times, I was one of the youngest and would be asked “Why don’t young people care about politics? Why don’t they participate?”. I always said that we do care yet there haven’t been candidates reflective over our values. THIS IS HISTORIC!

Thank you Obama and all my fellow Obama supporters for showing our values – that our country’s greatness lies in our diversity, our vitality, our commitment for the future through hope and hard work.

Thank you all for you hard work and for giving me reason to believe again in ‘one voice’.

With liberty and justice for all!

Just got back from a small town in Iowa for a caucus (my boyfriend lives there) and it was pretty much 40 and under on the Obama side and a lot of elderly for Hillary. Edwards was a mix. But we had 4 delegates and Obama got 2 and the other candidates 1 a piece. I heard the same result happened in Iowa City.

Go Obama!
Re: We did it | Report to Admin Reply
By Jon from Council Bluffs, IA 34 minutes ago
It was the same way at my Caucus. Lots of elderly for Hillary, but only one young person in that group. Whereas our Obama group was mixed but it was refreshing to see some younger faces there. Made for easy talking amongst one another, along with the 30 and 40 somethings.

They are going to be spinning it that way all the way until Tuesday, but we'll have to see if it works. It is annoying I agree, but there argument of the race being so close is starting to run out as it appears we are up by 6% now.

This is great! 6% is about what I expected, but it would be FANTASTIC if we could get up to around 8-10%.

Great point, Laurianne! Bll Schneider on CNN was making a similar point on the air a couple minutes ago - he was saying that their polling shows HRC did very poorly with IND voters, and NH primary voters are usually up to 40% of the total! That bodes very poorly for her. Barack can go all the way, friends!

A black candidate "with a funny name" wins in a state that is 95 percent white.

This will be in the front page of newspapers around the world.

America, stand proud. We have chosen wisely, already increased our standing in the world, and shown the best in us.

It's from Iowa to the White House

War in Iraq
Economy
Health Care

CNN's Bill Schneider says that Our Candidate won on all of these fronts.
Obama also won 41 percent of the independent vote, by far more than Clinton.

The pundits: people chose change over experience.

I just came from the caucus center, first time for me. I had my 9 year old for future experience. We had 169 participants in our event in the area middle school. 66 of us stood for Barack while 52 for Edwards, and the serious looking Hillary group was 51. At times it looked like a tag of war. Some of us crossed the line to persuade the smaller groups of Richardson and Biden people. All of us in the three main groups took our share. Finally they did the math, and though we were ahead with 66 head counts we stayed at 2 delegates. So did Edwards and H. Precisely we would be more than 2 delegates but the mathematical formula would be 2 point something and both Edwards and H would be 1 point something... So they rounded it up and gave each 2 delegate numbers. My other friend I encouraged to go helped Barack win their Caucus precinct. Good news from our little world guys. Again those of you who inspired us with your consistent positive messages, but live in distant places from Iowa, cheer up. We are winning this thing.

Tonight is a win for America all around. My first election I voted in was 20 years ago. I wouldn't have believed it if someone said in 20 years a presidential caucus would have results like:

A woman garnering 30%
A Mormon garnering 25%

and a bi-racial man garnering 37%!

We are waking up and bringing MLK jr's dream to life. It's about time!

DONATE MONEY NOW, OVER AND OVER AGAIN

I just really stepped up and put my money where my heart is. I had previously pledged $50 initally then got a match just as they called the race for a second $50... and to show my joy, i Just pledged 10 matches @ $25 a piece. You can do it to. Even just one. Barack needs our blood, sweat, money, and love to beat the Hillary machine. You can bet they will take the gloves off and come right at us know, but she's on the ropes and we can land the KO by Valentines Day. Donate Tonight, make the news in the morning as the campaign expounds it's fundraising to the press, and we go on to change the world!!!!

My message to my 10 Pledges on Matches:

I was an undecided voter until December. It was around that time that I realized we had a chance to make this world a better place if we simply believed again. Obama has really stoked my passion and earned my support in a strong way. I live in Texas so I can't vote yet, but making this donation is the best way vote where it matters. I know you believe in Obama after tonight's performance and I want you to know you're one of the 10 matches I've made this evening for $25 each. Thank you so much for joining me, and if you can spare it, please consider matching yourself in the future. Together we'll all stand to make this a better world. One voice just shook the world! GO OBAMA GO!

Congratulations!!! to Senator Obama. It would be nice to see included into the Senator’s speech tonight a call for unity, peace and reconciliation among Kenyan’s who are currently dying for Democracy. This will be strongly and positively heard and praise in around the world, and it will differentiate Senator Obama from other presidential candidates by showing its experience and its readiness to lead as well as its ability to think about current world affairs while running for office. We have had condemnations for Benazir Butho’s Dead; let him express its dissatisfaction or say at least something about what’s going on in Kenyan which could be I believe very positive for the Campaign.

No, I like Edwards' message. He speaks like an attorney and he's prosecuting a civil action against the whole of corporate America. I appreciate his ability to "stick it to the man" because if I had $15 million, I'd want to stick it to the man too.

Heck, if he'd give me $15,000, I think I'd stick it to the man. I hope Edwards gets the clue and starts a microenterprise incubator in the U.S. like we have in Africa.
Re: Hmrph | Report to Admin Reply

Clinton at least congratulated Barack and Edwards. But she was so uninspiring as she talked about changing the world. It was much the same message but somehow lacked conviction and heart of Obama. I'm glad we're all behind someone who can inspire us, and I hope Sen. Clinton's (as well as Biden's, Dodd's, Kucinch's and Richardson's) supporters join us in a movement for change.

As a European, I have to say that tonight I have been left astounded. After seeing the American people vote in George W. Bush twice (the second time being beyond belief) we had all but lost hope in you guys. But tonight you have amazingly and thankfully proven us all wrong. America needs to be recaptured by its people. You need to take back your rightful place in the world as beacons of hope and dreams that we all once aspired to. Barack Obama embodies what America should be and what it once was, so this is not about him as an individual but that which he represents, all that was right with your nation, and all that we used to love about you.
The fact that he is an idealistic shows us that for the moment at least, the people of Iowa have shown us that America aspires for higher ideals than the awful carnage created at the hands of the lunatics neo-cons. We love you all, come back to where you once were, take back your country!!! Obama all the way!

Edwards and Clinton both drew more caucus-goers than John Kerry did in 2004. The Democratic Party won.

Hillary Clinton is still thinking like she's a member of the minority party. She's talking about how "Republicans who see the light" are joining her to "change this nation". She's forgotten that she IS the status quo.
